Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming one of the defining forces of the twenty-first century. From education and healthcare to finance, governance, media, and public life, these technologies are transforming the institutions and systems upon which modern societies depend.

For Muslim communities, the significance of artificial intelligence extends beyond questions of technical innovation. As AI becomes more deeply embedded within everyday life, it raises important questions about human agency, justice, responsibility, knowledge, and the values that shape technological development. Decisions made today by researchers, governments, corporations, and institutions will influence how these technologies affect communities for generations to come.

The challenge is not simply whether artificial intelligence should be embraced or resisted. Disengagement risks leaving Muslim voices absent from conversations that will help shape the future, while uncritical adoption risks accepting technologies without sufficient reflection on their ethical, social, and spiritual consequences. Meaningful engagement requires a more thoughtful approach—one that combines technological literacy with ethical discernment and a clear understanding of the broader human questions at stake.

The Artificial Intelligence Research Stream at ICAIR examines the opportunities, risks, and long-term implications of emerging technologies through the combined lenses of Islamic scholarship and contemporary research. By bringing together scholars, technologists, academics, and practitioners, the stream seeks to contribute principled perspectives to ongoing debates while helping Muslim communities engage confidently and constructively with one of the most transformative developments of our age.
