Modernism, Secularism and Shia Youth by Shaykh Dr Vinay Khetia
In this paper I set out to explore the ideals and realities of North American Shiʿism but within the context of the North American youth experience. Ideals may be thought of as the precepts of textual religion or what is proclaimed to be a version of orthodoxy whereas the realities are demonstrated through the lived experiences of religious people which often does not integrate entirely with the ideals or lives in stark contradiction to the latter.
The questions that this paper will specifically address is how the bifurcation between ideals and realities is mediated and expressed in light of what Charles Taylor describes as the Secular Age and in doing so I will take Taylor’s point of departure along with Sherman Jackson’s discourse on liberalism as a means of understanding the source of such a rupture between religious ideals and realities specifically through the lived experience of Shia youth in Toronto whom I have worked with as a full-time educator and counsellor for over ten years.
Speaker Biography:
Dr. Vinay Khetia is the Academic Director of the Shi’a Research Institute, Toronto. He holds a Ph.D in Religious Studies from McMaster University. He has also attained a Master of Arts in History and Philosophy of Religion from Concordia University, and a Bachelor of Arts in History, Religious Studies, & Near & Middle Eastern Studies from University of Toronto.
