On the Authenticity of Ziyārat ʿĀshūrāʾ: A Text Critical Approach

Author: Hassan Ansari

Date of Publication: 12 August, 2025

Abstract

This article examines the authenticity of Ziyārat ʿĀshūrāʾ through an internal text-critical approach, rather than through traditional analysis of chains of transmission (isnād). Focusing on the content and historical context of the text, the author argues that its themes, language, and references are consistent with the late Umayyad period. The study highlights the absence of anachronistic elements, the prominence of themes such as allegiance (wilāya) and disassociation (barāʾa), and the strong focus on opposition to the Umayyad regime, all of which align with the socio-political and religious conditions of early Shīʿī communities. The article further notes the specificity with which figures associated with the oppression of the Ahl al-Bayt are mentioned, suggesting composition during a time when these figures remained historically immediate. It also interprets the text as reflecting broader Shīʿī sentiments of resistance, anticipation of justice, and communal identity formation. While acknowledging that such analysis cannot definitively establish attribution to Imam al-Bāqir, the author concludes that the ziyāra can plausibly be understood as originating in, or closely reflecting, the late Umayyad context, and possibly functioning as a formative or promotional text within early Shīʿī circles.
