Ziyārat ʿĀshūrāʾ Between Taqiyya and Tabarrī | Part 2: The Authenticity of Ziyārat ʿĀshūrāʾ
In Part 2 of this six-part lecture series, Ḥujjat al-Islām Sayyid Mahdī Maḥmoudī addresses one of the most common questions surrounding Ziyārat ʿĀshūrāʾ: Which early Shīʿī sources preserve this ziyārah, and how do scholars assess its authenticity?
Beginning with the earliest authoritative Imāmī compilations, Sayyid Maḥmoudī introduces the principal textual sources that transmit Ziyārat ʿĀshūrāʾ, including Kāmil al-Ziyārāt of Ibn Qūlawayh and Miṣbāḥ al-Mutahajjid of Shaykh al-Ṭūsī.
He then explains the two major methods by which Shīʿī scholars authenticate ḥadīth – authentication through confidence in issuance (wuthūq al-ṣudūr) and authentication through the chain of transmission (ṣiḥḥat al-sanad) – showing that Ziyārat ʿĀshūrāʾ satisfies both approaches.
This episode lays the scholarly foundation for the remainder of the series by demonstrating that the discussion surrounding Ziyārat ʿĀshūrāʾ is rooted not only in devotional practice but also in rigorous hadith criticism and manuscript scholarship.
